Ég er yfirlýstur aðdáandi Svissneska listamannsins Philippe DeCrauzat.  Hann er ungur og sprækur formalískur óþekktarormur.

Adam E. Mendelsohn listgagnrýnandi hefur hitt á naglann á höfuðið þegar hann skrifaði um verk DeCrauzats í Art Views. 

Ein skemmtilegasta umfjöllun sem ég hef lesið í langan tíma, enda Mendelsohn augljóslega líka óþekktarormur.

Blah blah de blah blah blah (blah blah blah blah blah) - blah blah. Blah 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional blahs blah blah blah. If blah blah blah, than blah blah blah blah. Blah blah such as Untitled (2006), blah blah blah blah. Blah blah, blah blah blahs - blah blah, blah and blah. Blah blah film loop which didn¹t work, blah blah blah te blah te dah.

When I blah blah blah blah, it blah blah blahed. Blah blah blah blah, Peter Saville, blah blah blah. Blah blah blahed, of blah blah Joy Division track called Substance - blah blah blah, blah blah blahed blah de blah. Blah blah blah blah John Armleder, Francis Baudevin John Trembley, and Sidney Stucki blah, blah blah 70¹s blahed and blah. Plate 28 blahed with blah and blah, but blahed over blah and blahying. Blah, blah blah - blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah, blah: blah blah blahying with blah blah blah. Blah blah.

Er þetta ekki greinin?

I wanted to like Philippe Decrauzat’s first solo show in New York. The young, Swiss artist has developed quite a reputation in Europe as a formalist bad boy and intellectual rebel. During the recent Basel Art Fair, he didn’t even bother to turn up to collect his Swiss Award for Best Newcomer.

But the exhibition “Plate 28” is a disappointingly mixed bag of familiar references: Op art, Constructivism, Eadweard Muybridge, The Twilight Zone and, that ubiquitous signifier of hip, post-punk music. Pulsar is nothing more than a silk-screen print of a graph purporting to chart the first-ever recording of a sound wave. Having trouble picturing it? Consult the cover of Joy Division’s album Unknown Pleasures. The image gains little by Decrauzat’s recontextualization.

More effective is the show’s centerpiece, a massive vinyl wall work titled A Square. The black-and-white grid wraps around three walls; in its presence, you may feel like a figure trapped inside a Muybridge photo, standing still yet experiencing motion due to the pattern’s optical effects. (The show also includes a film loop, though it was not functioning on two separate visits.)

All in all, Decrauzat’s show is too cryptic. Its mishmash of artistic strategies and cultural references may leave you wondering why you showed up for this newcomer yourself. — Adam E. Mendelsohn

Jú Kristinn þetta er greinin. Hún var upphaflega í Tome out í NYC. Ég var einmitt úti um þetta leyti í 6 mánuði og las hana og þekkti þá lítið til DeCrauzat. En þetta var neikvæðasta gagnrýni sem ég hafði lesið í blaðinu.  Mér varð svo um að ég tuskaðist til að sjá sýninguna í Swiss institute og þetta reyndist ein besta sýningin sem ég sá þessa mánuði í NYC.

Sá sem sat yfir sýningunni sagði mér líka að það hafi orðið metaðsókn strax og þessi neikvæða gagnrýni birtist.
